I-409 aims at illegal OLYMPIA, Wash. (Map, News) - Supporters of an illegal immigrant initiative have until December to collect about 225,000 signatures to send it to the Legislature.
I-409 would deny public benefits and driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. And, employers would have to verify that workers are in the country legally.
Initiative backers include the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, a civilian group that monitors the borders. One member, Hal Washburn, says the initiative will force the Legislature to take a stand on the issue.
An immigrant advocate, Dianne Aid with St. Matthew's Church in Auburn, calls the initiative inhumane and impractical.

If Visa and Mastercard can run my business and FedEx can find any package in 5 minutes, the Feds should just be outsourced on immigration. The can't do Feds can't run a war right, can't live within a budget, can't deliver the mail consistantly and can't get their trains to make a buck, they are useless running anything but their mouths. Throw 'em all out in November.

This is very important since both Obama and McCain are pro-illegals. In fact, for the first time in all my years of voting, I can't bring myself to vote for either the republican or democrat. I'll have to see if there is a worthy third party candidate. Otherwise I will vote to reelect my rep. He voted against amnesty in '86 and is still against amnesty. I've also donated money to his campaign.

Could you possibly make an uglier stew? It's a testament to the raw power of business money that they even exist openly in this country and exert serious influence. This is not the kind of country I was born into, and I'm not that old.

Ken said: Your colum is misleading, there is no such thing as a Illegal Immigrant, under the law anyone who is in this country Illegally from another country is a "Illegal Alien". Please keep to the topic, and correct this statement, it shows a bias in your writting skills.
Examiner Reader said: Illegal aliens should have no rights. Upon arrests, they and their anchor babies should be shackled and shipped back in cattle trucks, freight trains, cargo planes or even cargo ships. In other words, ship them back the cheapest and fastest way possible. They can go a few days without food. Give them a ration of water and that's it. Good riddance!!!
A Proud American said: Businesses have nothing to fear if they knowlingly hire American and legal workers. If they use E-Verify, although not a perfect system, it will give them a good idea if their workers are legal. I don't buy this "I didn't know" BS. If the majority of your work force is Hispanic and none of them speak English, its a pretty good chance that they are not legal. Businesses are greedy and not willing to pay a decent salary with benefits, so hiring an illegal gives them the upper hand...that is until ICE come knocking. I hope they continue and expand the raids to send a message to these corrupt businesses. Send the owners and managers to prison for awhile and maybe that will send the message.
Minutemen push initiative against illegal immigrants YouNewsTV™ Story Published: Aug 26, 2008 at 6:22 PM PDT Story Updated: Aug 26, 2008 at 7:54 PM PDT

MONROE, Wash. -- Some in Washington state are so unhappy with illegal immigration they're sponsoring an initiative to require proof of citizenship or proper papers when applying for a driver's license or a job.
They're taking their lead from Arizona, where voters have already said "yes" to similar laws. The effort here is being led by the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
These are not the historical minutemen. Their cry is not that the British are coming but that the aliens are coming, and the borders are porous.
They've been trying to help seal the border. But on Tuesday came an admission: "Frankly, that hasn't worked," said Hal Washburn with the group.
"The federal government has just shrugged its shoulders and said 'We'll fix it one of these days,' but really they've done nothing," Washburn added.
Washburn says sure, federal officials occasionally make big raids in Oregon, but more is needed.
Under Initiative-409, undocumented workers wouldn't even be able to get a drivers license.
"It would require proof of legal presence. They'd either have to be a U.S. citizen or be in our country legally," Washburn said.
Under the initiative, any firm giving an undocumented worker a job could lose its business license.
To make the ballot, the initiative needs almost a quarter million signatures. Now, if this were a Tim Eyman initiative, they would be signature gatherers everywhere you look. But this is a volunteer effort. They told us they'd be at the Evergreen State Fair. But we didn't find them; they didn't find us.
Latinos say the initiative is punitive, even restricting access to health care. Opponents say it would turn every employer, every doctor into an immigration agent.
"It's a ridiculous suggestion," said Roberto Maestas with El Centro De La Raza, a Chicano/Latino civil rights organization. "It's impossible. I can't see how the citizens of this country in 2008 would think that would help the immigration crunch that we are all facing."
The big problem for this initiative is not just what the sponsors call the liberal views of Washington state. The big problem is the number of signatures they need. With no paid workers the task is at least daunting, if not a job for Superman.
CBJL...do you have a link for the article with the comments???
We were glad to sign the petition and I hope they get enough signatures!!! One major problem is our motor voter law....don't know how many are voting that are not citizens. We will probably have another messy gubnatorial race this year.
Go look at those signatures now from your first post on this page CJ. Amazing.

Folks. I've gone to the site three times, voted three times, and the only numbers I see are very, very small in number. Am I missing something? Somebody please post a tally. Some of the numbers aren't higher than 20 and three of them are mine. Thanks.
Hmmmmm..Could it be that is because of the area it is in by any chance? I see the same thing Frank
