A Presidential Pardon is their only hope! After losing their appeal with the Fifth Circuit Court, Nacho Ramos and Jose Compean’s only hope for freedom is in President Bush, who up until this point, has turned a deaf ear to pleas from citizens and members of Congress urging him to set these agents free. Did you know that your tax dollars helped construct a visitor’s center that you can’t visit? That’s right. Taxpayers forked over $200,000 worth of federal transportation dollars to commemorate the birthplace of President James Monroe, and it remains closed! Before skipping town last week for a five week paid vacation--compliments of U.S. taxpayers, the House passed a bill containing more than 500 earmarks--like the one above, and then no doubt patted each other on the back for a job well done. This kind of arrogant, unaccountability from our supposed leadership brings my blood to a boil. But nothing got me as worked up as reading about the “Parking Garage to Nowhere.” According to investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson, Rep. Paul Kajorski (D-11 PA), funneled more than $3 million in taxpayer monies to build the Kanjorski Center. Now built, the building has been sitting vacant since 2005, with the city picking up the $15,000 a month tab. If that’s not outrageous enough, Kanjorski is attempting to siphon an additional $5.6 million for a parking garage project for his vacant building. Court rejects Ramos/Compean appeal (breaking)

We have just learned that the 5th Circuit has rejected the Ramos/Compean appeal and has sided with Johnny Sutton. This is an outrage. Please see below. --Steve After months and months of delays, today the 5th Circuit rejected the most important aspects of the appeal by imprisoned border patrol agents Ramos and Compean. That means the court has sided with Johnny Sutton -- and Ramos and Compean now face at least 10 years in prison for attempting to apprehend a convicted illegal alien drug smuggler! We have posted a link to the court's ruling in which the judges conclude that the trial "was conducted fairly and without reversible error" -- even though the court admitted to "exclusion of evidence" (i.e. suppression of evidence) regarding the drug smuggler! We have just received word that the Senate will vote TODAY on whether to abandon the debate on seeking solutions for America’s current energy crisis, in favor of Harry Reid’s omnibus spending bill! There will be a Senate vote at 4 p.m. today to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to S. 3297—Reid’s massive $11.3 billion earmarking package that would focus on such issues as banning the interstate sale of primates, studying shipwrecks, and building a new greenhouse in Maryland rather than responsibly addressing America’s energy crisis! This should be viewed as a slap in the face to all Americans, and I’m urging you to take immediate action right now. Congress is about to go on a four-week vacation without taking action on rising gas prices. Please see below. --Steve Gas prices continue to soar yet Congress does nothing! Just the other day President Bush issued an executive order to expand offshore drilling but this do-nothing Congress hasn’t taken action to lift the legislative ban that prohibits more drilling. I believe the first vital step to energy independence is for Congress to get out of the way and allow more domestic drilling! We must show OPEC we mean business! The Fourth of July is perhaps our nation’s brightest day--highlighted by parades, and fireworks in cities and towns from coast-to-coast. But Independence Day hasn’t come for Border Agents Nacho Ramos and Jose Compean, who are both still awaiting the decision on their appeals heard back in December. I decided to write this update after one of our Grassfire staffers told me that she’s been keeping the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit webpage open on her computer since Ramos and Compean’s December appeal. “I check it every day,” she said. “It’s my little way of remembering them, and keeping them in my thoughts.” I like that idea so much I’m encouraging everyone on our team to do the same.
